Be local … simply means everything we do in and around our community. It's actively supporting the area in which we live. The quality of life is good here — it's a great place to "BE." So, enjoy the Northfield area … shop local, eat local, read local, learn local, listen local, talk local … by being active in our community we build a brighter, more vibrant today and tomorrow.

Buy local … supporting area businesses ensures the availability of the wide variety of products and services we're able to enjoy so close to home.

What is Be Local … Buy Local?

Be Local … Buy Local (BLBL) is a new community-wide campaign initiated by the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce and Northfield Downtown Development Corporation, that promotes the importance of "shopping locally" for products and services in the Northfield area. Key partners will work toward this cause through a variety of communications, including media coverage, incentives, special promotions, e-newsletter, etc. Everyone can make a difference!

Our Goals:

1.) Maintain our distinct character …

… The blend of small-town charm with a contemporary edge makes the Northfield area an ideal destination. Whether you're dining out, shopping, or just relaxing near the Cannon River, our area offers something for everyone. There's a wide variety of services and amenities and a diverse array of cultural, recreational, and entertainment opportunities.

2.) Sustain a vibrant, diverse business mix …

… It seems the old saying "What comes around, goes around" is true. Buying from local businesses helps to keep money circulating in town. Area farms, neighborhood stores, leisure and hospitality, manufacturing, and numerous professional services to name a few all benefit from our continued support and, in turn, help to support each other.

3.) Promote prosperity in our community …

… When we invest in our community, we pave the way for greater things. By actively looking for ways to give back to our community, and by spending our dollars locally, we retain businesses, help to create jobs, and work to support and sustain the vitality and vibrancy of our community.

How to get connected

Familiarize yourself with the Chamber directory. This directory contains a wide variety of businesses, including a detailed listing of the Northfield area professional sector. How about those really cool vintage and contempory shops downtown? Check out the NDDC directory for more information. Storeowners are more than willing to work with customers to get you those hard to find items — no need to fill up the car for a day's trek. Maybe it's something they already have on hand — if not, just ask; they most likely can save you the extra hassle of looking elsewhere.

Want to do more? Here's how …

Make time to get to know the Northfield area better … check out the stores, go out to eat, take in some arts and culture … try something different.

Ask questions. Go to business web sites and email them if you are in need of something you can't find. Or simply give them a call.

Think about transferring professional services that still remain out of town to someone local.

Encourage fundraising in schools and organizations to have a local source.

Sign-up to receive the Chamber's e-newsletter that highlights area businesses and promotes special offers. Be sure to share it with your friends!
