Northfield is a community that appreciates the arts in all forms, and the spiritual energy that flows from combining talent with vision, energy and imagination. It is a community that has created a culture that nurtures musicians, artists, actors and craftsmen and creates opportunities for them to share their talents with the larger communities.
The Minnesota State Arts Board recently praised the quality of the arts in Northfield as an example to all communities. Every week, Northfield offers cultural opportunities from gallery shows and plays to music and dance concerts. Local artisans open their studios for Art Crawls twice a year and most welcome visitors any time.
Fine Arts Exhibits
You may view frequently changing fine arts exhibitions at the Northfield
Arts Guild Gallery, the Flaten Art Museum and the Kings' Room Corridor at St. Olaf College, Boliou
Hall and the Music and Drama Center Gallery at Carleton College. A new ogranization, Northfield ArtOrg, is hosting and coordinated classes and events to encourage visual artists in the area.
Music and Theaters
The theaters and concert halls of Carleton and St. Olaf colleges
welcome you to their many performances, recitals, classic and contemporary
plays, dance performances, orchestral and choral concerts by students,
faculty and professional musicians. Local businesses feature a wide
range of musical entertainment, and you will often find an active
program of music in the parks and in our downtown Bridge Square.
The Northfield Arts Guild Theater invites you to its plays and musicals,
featuring local talent in performances you will long remember. There
are three theater groups at Carleton. The St. Olaf theater department
presents five theatrical productions per year plus a one-act play
festival on four evenings each May.
