Education

The Northfield School District offers a progressive educational program, grounded in a rigorous basic curriculum. Parents of elementary children can choose between a standard contemporary curriculum or a partial Spanish immersion program. The All-Day Kindergarten program offers students the option of benefiting from a full day of learning. Northfield Middle School serves students in grades six through eight with multi-disciplinary approach. Northfield High School offers a strong college preparatory program. The Alternative Learning Center educates students in a less traditional setting. Approximately 90 percent of Northfield graduates go on to attend post-secondary schools.

The integrated curriculum at Prairie Creek Community School, a progressive public charter school, reflects the interdisciplinary nature of knowledge organized around themes of inquiry.

A new charter school, ARTech, will provide students with an individualized, innovative educational program enhanced through the arts and aided by technology.

Families in search of faith-based education can chose St. Dominic’s Catholic School, which offers programming to students of all faiths.

Northfield Public Schools Community Services Division offers a wide variety of programs to community members of all ages.

Carleton College and St. Olaf College are two nationally ranked, four-year liberal arts college that bring 5,000 energetic college students to Northfield each year.

Carleton College, often referred to as the Harvard of the Midwest, consistently attracts more National Merit Scholars than any other liberal arts college in the country. It has consistently inspired students in large numbers to pursue doctoral degrees in laboratory science and mathematics.

St. Olaf College also has an outstanding reputation for science and math, but the college is best known for its exceptional music program. The St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf Orchestra and St. Olaf Band have won international acclaim.

Both schools offer global opportunities to their students and emphasize service to community.

The Cannon Valley Elder Collegium offers courses taught by retired professors and community members to persons of all ages. Also, St. Olaf College offers a Lifelong Learning program.
