The
homes and neighborhoods of Northfield are a fascinating blend of
the historic, the traditional and the contemporary; and new developments
have remained sensitive to facilitating community connections.
Close to the city center you will find tree-lined streets and predictable lots completing John North’s original, orderly grid plat design. There are stately, 19th-century homes that stand as a testament to the community’s prosperity and optimism as it came of age. There are more modest, but no less romantic, two-story homes, many with sprawling front porches that promote neighborhood conversation. The homes have been well maintained. Many have been restored to their original design, and others have been gracefully adapted to suit contemporary living patterns.
The growth in the latter half of the 20th century produced a new look with the custom-built ranch housed placed along curvilinear streets and cul-de-sacs as the city gradually expanded its borders. In more recent years, there has been the rapid addition of large, distinctive homes that favor three-car garages, first in developments east of town and more recently on the northwest edge of town. There have also been a number of town home and twin home developments that have proved popular with empty nesters, retirees or single professionals; and apartments are located throughout the community.
A number of area communities are considered part of Northfield’s extended family. They offer a more intimate, cluster lifestyle that combines country living with the benefit of nearby neighbors.
