    The Northfield School District has a reputation for offering strong programs in academics, the arts and athletics from elementary grades through high school. The district also offers pre-school, early childhood family education and kindergarten programs. The district has a state-of-the-art middle school and the high school offers a strong college preparation curriculum, including advanced placement courses and a senior honors program where students can take courses at St. Olaf or Carleton colleges.

    From its earliest days, Northfield has been home to two outstanding liberal arts colleges. Northfield College was founded in 1866 and later became Carleton College to honor a benefactor, William Carleton in 1871. Today, Carleton’s enrollment is around 2,000 students. The St. Olaf School was formed in 1874. Its original purpose was to educate Norwegian immigrants and prepare them for life in America. Today, St. Olaf’s enrollment is approximately 3,100.
